How to Choose the Right Chandelier Size for Any Room

For chandeliers hung over a dining table, use the table width as your guide instead of the room:

• The chandelier should be ½ to ⅔ the width of the table
• For a 42-inch wide table, aim for a 21–28 inch chandelier
• Hang the bottom of the fixture 30–34 inches above the tabletop

For foyers, the chandelier should hang so the bottom is at least 7 feet above the floor — higher if the space allows. In two-story entryways, position the fixture so it's visible and impactful from both floors.

Living Room Chandeliers

In open living rooms, use the room formula above. If the chandelier hangs over a seating area rather than the full room, size it to the conversation grouping — typically 24–36 inches in diameter for a standard sofa arrangement.
